Stereotypes I still have

Don’t understand the culture

Don’t speak the language

They have to take extra steps to achieve the same goals (it is more difficult for them)

Big family

While talking to people in my user group, I understood that there was a culture divide. But often not of their own accord, but because of the separation of language and or acceptance.

It is more difficult to learn about a culture if you hit a wall every direction you go, the same goes for the language. And both of these elements also hinder the daily life of an expat, and makes it more difficult for them to do certain things.

1.2

Personally, I relate to the not feeling like the culture belongs to me, I’m mixed and only because of that Ive never really felt as if I could totally claim the Dutch culture as mine. And I think the connection with not belonging to the culture is interesting to me.

2.1

1-Aggressive

2-lazy

3-Escaped bad situation

4-Rich parents

5-Don't speak the language

2.2

In the media (the news) they make expats look more dangerous. And tend to put groups against each other. Also, tv shows portray the rich expat student moving to a different country to experience something new a lot. Often, they are depicted as lazy and worry free.

3.1

Who puts on the stereo type? Often the older generation, that don't know much about different cultures. They say that the expats are taking away their jobs and or are stealing their money. They are afraid of missing out on certain things and bring the blame on expats.

Also, the news depicts expats in a bad light, to create a divide and rage people on.

3.2

Expats are getting represented a lot more in tv and media in a brighter light, they have a more humane vision. And aren't stereotyped as much, the character is developed and intriguing.
